Lawsuit to reverse the demolition of the monument to St. John Paul II in Santiago de Compostela (Spain)
« The rulers use any excuse to destroy Christian monuments. In this case, they have removed it and left a plaque. »
The Spanish Association of Christian Lawyers has filed an administrative appeal against the Ministry of Culture of the Galician Regional Government for the removal of the monument to St. John Paul II from Monte del Gozo (Santiago de Compostela) last March.
The lawyers’ organization requests the cancelation of resolution by which the demolition took place and requests the restitution of the monument in its original place.
Christian Lawyers also does not rule out criminal proceedings against the president of the Junta, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, considering that the removal of the monument is an attack on religious feelings.
The president of Christian Lawyers, Polonia Castellanos, declared that “the Junta allows monuments to communist leaders such as Che Guevara in Galicia, against the recommendations of the European Parliament, while demolishing Christian symbols, in violation of the Constitution itself”.
He assures that “those in power use any excuse to destroy Christian monuments. In this case, the Board said it would make an intervention to preserve and enhance the value of the monument and what it has done is to remove it and leave only a plaque”. He recalls that “in other localities, governed by parties of the radical left, they have used the same argument to demolish crosses”.
The lawyers’ organization has launched a collection of signatures on its website which, so far, has attracted nearly 23,000 people.
